About Us

Ruth Education Center (REC) was founded as an informal charitable body on 1st July, 2011. As Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Convention on Refugees, refugees in the country have no legal rights, especially the right to education and employment. REC is officially registered with UNHCR (Malaysia) with the express purpose of providing free higher education to Myanmar refugee youths aged 13 to 18 years.

Pastor Michael Moey, founder and principal of REC, was approached by a refugee leader to set up the school. He then started the school together with his wife, Grace Moey, Joseph Phoon and Ng Siang Yu Phoon as the co-founders. The refugee students are being expected to pay RM 75/month per student which is far from enough to cover up all the expenses. Hence, REC is financially supported by the kindness and love of some churches and the generosity of some friends to cover up the costs to run. REC has a team of qualified, experienced and voluntary instructors. None of the instructors is being paid by the centre and each of their services is an act of love and compassion.

REC is a residential centre with six dormitories where students stay in from Mondays to Saturdays. Each dorm has its leader of that particular dorm. Lunch and dinner are provided under the consideration that students will take turn to cook and clean up the dishes and the place. Every Sunday afternoon, the students are given time to go home and spend time with their families.

“Fidelis, Diligentia, Ordine and Caritas” comes as the core values of REC which are the Latin words for “Faithfulness, Diligent, Orderliness and Love”. Students in REC are taught various subjects and skills for their development in education, vocational skills and spiritual life. As to improve in education, English, mathematics, science and economics subjects are being taught. The students are trained in vocational skills such as multimedia, dramatic recitation, urban farming, making digital newsletters, music and choir. Some students are trained to teach by qualified trainers and are being sent out to teach in other 18 refugee schools as teachers. REC provides Bible classes and conducts devotion time every morning for spiritual development. Besides these, students have night prayers in their own dorms and REC holds a worship service on every Sunday.
